World Retail Study Tour 2014
14th– 30th May 2014
Retail is constantly on the move. That’s why the Westfield World Retail Study Tour moves with it. In May 2014, we visited San Francisco, Seattle, Stockholm, London and Barcelona over two immersive weeks. We heard from over 50 speakers, visited hundreds of stores, shared countless stories and observations with fellow retail passionates, and built a network to last a lifetime. That’s why we call it a mini MBA in retail.
First stop on the Tour, San Francisco not only the home of the Golden Gate Bridge, but also right at the intersection of retail and technology today. Downtown, they walked Union Square and surrounds saw both flagship stores and malls, including Williams-Sonoma’s multi-story store, and Westfield San Francisco Centre. Half an hour out of town, you’re in the heart of Silicon Valley, with many leading tech companies from Apple to Cisco Systems. On the Study Tour, they got a taste of the best of retail today, and where it’s headed.
Seattle is a surprise packet to many retail observers, because so many of the world’s leading retailers call the Pacific Northwest city their home. Here you’ll find Amazon, Starbucks, Costcoand Nordstrom to name a few. Visited the famous Pike Place Markets, which has featured in many a movie, and is the place where flying fish redefine the meaning of retail theatre! Seattle is also a tech haven – they call it the Silicon Forest – the group took a tour at Microsoft’s HQ as well as high tech concept store Hointer.
Super cool, super efficient and super inspiring; that’s Stockholm. This is the home of H&M and IKEA. The group enjoyed a visit of both their stores and their head offices, and heard their stories. Experience some of the most inspiring apparel retail on the planet, including Odd Molly and ACNE Jeans (inside the bank where the Stockholm Syndrome took place – check out the vault which is now a change room).
In London we experienced some of the most imaginative retail concepts anywhere – from Dover Street market to Harvey Nichols. Regent Street and Oxford Street’s array of incredible retail, including Burberry’s new flagship; the store of the future. Oxford Street is now bookended by two of the most high volume stores in the world, Primark. The new Tottenham Court Road store is even more impressive to their Oxford Street Store. Naturally they had VIP guided tours of Westfield London and Westfield Stratford now in the top 10 shopping destinations in the UK. While in London, they enjoyed guided tours to some of the best high street shopping in the world, including Old and New Bond Street, Borough Market and Covent Garden, where we stayed at the Grand, Savoy Hotel.
Barcelona is a celebration of retail, and a celebration of life. Here they found the world’s best examples of Zara, and all the Inditex brands – including Bershka, Oysho, Stradivarius and Uterque. This is also a Camper town – not only numerous innovative Camper shoe stores, but also Hotel Casa Camper. The Tour wandered off down the beaten path into the backstreets of Barcelona, then along the famous Las Ramblas (inspiration for Santana Row, which you’ll visit in San Francisco), and into La Boqueria, the centuries old food market.
